Ashtanga Yoga is the original Power or
Vinyasa Yoga, as taught by Sri Pattabhi Jois of Mysore India. In its original
form, the series of linked movements are taught at the learning pace of the
student who practices until they are mastered before learning the next sequence.
This reduces muscle soreness and the risk of injury but insuring that muscle
strength, endurance, and flexibility develop together at a steady pace.
Traditional Ashtanga Yoga does not use props during the practice but relies on
body weight and the gradual awakening of one’s own awareness to bring balance to
the body. Sandra will help you achieve this with hands-on assistance in each
asana as needed. Once a posture has been adapted for your unique structure and
needs, you should try to remember this modification each time you practice. If
props are needed for this modification, you are encouraged to purchase what you
need and use them until a new modification is given.
This practice may be quite vigorous but may be adapted to all levels of ability.
Ayurvedic Yoga considers the effects of the
seasons and the student’s nature along with any energetic imbalances that may be
present; by developing sequences to alleviate energetic imbalance, one’s ability
to heal present disorders as well as ward off future illness is enhanced. Not a
substitute for medical advice or treatment but an integral part of a healthy
lifestyle which can reduce the need for multiple medications. This practice may
begin quite gently and advance in vigor as you gain in strength.
Qigong is the Chinese tradition of movement
meditation, related to Tai Chi. Physical movement is a bridge to moving energy (Qi)
with the mind to any parts of the body which needs healing. Forms range from
very gentle to quite vigorous, from short and easy to learn to complex and
challenging. Forms taught come from the traditions taught by Master Zhongxian
Wu, a lineage holder of several traditional systems of Qigong.
Thai Assisted Yoga is the indigenous
folk medicine of Thailand, practiced by whole families to keep each receiver in
radiant health and calm spirit. Considered the martial art of healing, Thai Yoga
allows both giver and receiver to benefit from the gracefully choreographed
sequences which can improve joint range of motion, release muscle tension, and
reduce stress through rhythmic compressions using feet, knees, palms, elbows,
forearms, and fingers. Sessions can range from one – two hours, allowing for
deepest relaxation, and are conducted fully clothed (wear loose, comfortable
clothing) on a full sized thick mat.
